M’Ayaresa: Connecting Ghanaian Healthcare with Innovation

M'Ayaresa October 28, 2024

M’Ayaresa began as a collaborative final year capstone project at Ashesi University, developed by Jochebed Basil and Aaron Tamakloe, both Computer Science majors. The project idea was inspired by a year-long research initiative with The Reach Alliance Publication focused on the “No Bed Syndrome” in Ghanaian tertiary hospitals, co-authored by our founder, Jochebed.

The research uncovered critical inefficiencies in the existing health information management system adopted in public hospitals that contributed to the scarcity of hospital beds. It identified that one of the causes of this syndrome was the fragmented integration of bed management with the current software solution. Initially, the duo aimed to develop a bed management sub-module that could integrate seamlessly into existing systems. However, through preliminary research and discussions with medical staff, they recognized that other components tied to bed management, such as billing and workflow integration, also presented significant challenges.

Further investigations indicated that 90% of hospital administrators attributed inefficiencies to the outsourced nature of current systems, while 10-20% of medical staff time was consumed by fixing software errors. These findings were instrumental in shaping the foundation of M’Ayaresa’s Hospital Information Management System (HIMS).

The unique data-driven approach to research that guided the design and development decisions of M’Ayaresa HIMS has set it apart in the industry. Not surprisingly, this tailored solution earned recognition, winning the 2024 Senior Year Capstone Project Award for Best Computer Science Team Applied Project.
